As mentioned above, my experience on the car hire industry in SA spans a couple of reviews and articles posted all over the net, today I want to share with you about some of the available methods of booking a car in the country. Do not make a choice until you have read all the available options as mentioned below.
Airport Car Rental
The country has 3 international airports i.e. there is one in Johannesburg, Cape Town and also in Durban. In all these you can find a car rental company. Some of the companies that you may find include, Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Budget, Imperial and Europcar to name only a few. This means you can just book a flight and not worry too much about the car to rent as you can sort it out when you get to the airport. For example, if you want to be near a beach you can rent a car in Cape Town or find yourself a KZN Car rental.
The car rental companies are not only available at international airports but you can also find them in the domestic ones. This means you can simply connect with a flight from these international airports and fly to any local one and only rent a car when you get there.
Major Cities and Key Areas
Car rental companies are all over the country. For example Imperial is in more than 20 locations, Avis also has many branches countrywide. This essentially means you can never be stranded wherever you are in South Africa and you can easily find a cheap car to rent .
To provide an example of some towns where you are most likely to find these include; George, Plettenberg Bay, Sandton, Randburg, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, Pine Town, Nelspruit, Bloemfontein, Hermanus, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Knysna, etc.
At Hotels
Some of the bigger hotels also accommodate car rental services. For example in some hotels you can find companies like Imperial and Avis. If you like, you can simply hire their shuttle to take you to a place where you can rent any car you like.
Book with a major rental company in your Home country
Another option is to simply find a company that operates both in South Africa as well as in your country. Just book the South African car from there and when you get to the airport you will simply go to their office to pick up the car.

One of the best things about booking online is that you usually get a better rate regardless of the country you are currently in. In my opinion booking a car through the net is one of the most convenient and easiest ways to do it.
